Advisor Workshops
Dr. Sonja Foss and Dr. William Waters offer
workshops for dissertation and thesis advisors. These are three-hour
workshops held on your own campus. They are designed to help
advisors develop productive relationships with doctoral and master's
advisees that result in high-quality dissertations and theses
completed in a timely manner.
The objectives for the workshops are:
- To address myths and misconceptions that
advisors and their students are likely to hold about the dissertation/thesis
process.
- To familiarize advisors with a framework
of dissertation/thesis advising that provides reasonable expectations
for the process.
- To facilitate advisors' understanding
of and sensitivity to students' perspectives in the dissertation/thesis
process.
- To offer advisors means by which they
and their advisees can more closely share expectations for and
conceptions of the dissertation/thesis.
- To introduce advisors to a process they
can use to help students conceptualize their dissertations/theses
so that both advisors and advisees have a clear and manageable
road map for the project.
- To introduce advisors to a system of managing
literature and qualitative data that they can teach their advisees
that allows students to handle large amounts of data efficiently
and that produces significant insights.
